Are there complications of hypernatremia treatment?

To prevent hypernatremia-induced brain shrinkage, neurons accumulate electrolytes in a matter of hours followed by organic osmolytes over several days to increase intracellular tonicity. Due to this adaptation, rapid correction of chronic hypernatremia can, in theory, result in cerebral edema. This phenomenon has been characterized in children but is not usually observed in adults.
