Age related changes that can affect Antiepileptics pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
Elderly patients frequently have progressive decline in Antiepileptics (AEDs) protein binding by albumin, increased volume of distribution, and slow drug elimination.
These patients also appear to have increased sensitivity to the side effects of many AEDs.
They are often on many other medications, which can lead to drug interactions.
More frequent monitoring of drug levels may be appropriate in this age group.
