What is Mixed Grass Pollens Allergen Extract
Mixed grass pollens allergen extract is an oral immunotherapy approved for treatment of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) with or without conjunctivitis that is induced by certain grass pollens in people ages 5 to 65 years.
Mixed grass pollens allergen extract contains a mixture of freeze-dried extracts from the pollens of 5 grass species, including Kentucky Blue Grass, Orchard, Perennial Rye, Sweet Vernal, and Timothy.
Severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening, can occur.
After administration of the first dose at the health care provider’s office, where the patient can be observed for potential adverse reactions, mixed grass pollens allergen extract can be taken at home
Indications
- allergic conjunctivitis
- allergic rhinitis
- Hypersensitivity to at least 1 of the 5 grass pollens contained in the product (Sweet Vernal, Orchard, Perennial Rye, Timothy, or Kentucky Bluegrass) should be confirmed by positive skin test or in vitro testing for pollen-specific IgE antibodies prior to administration.
- Initiate treatment 4 months prior to the expected onset of each grass pollen season and continue throughout the season.
- Safety data regarding starting treatment during the grass pollen season or restarting treatment after missing a dose are not available.
