Frovatriptan Brand Name– Frova
What is Frovatriptan
Frovatriptan is a central serotonin-receptor 1B and 1D agonist that is indicated for the treatment of acute migraine attacks with or without aura.
Frovatriptan is not indicated for the treatment of hemiplegic or basilar migraines or cluster headaches. The drug may be used off-label for menstrual migraine prophylaxis.
As with other second-generation 5-HT1 receptor agonists (“triptans”), frovatriptan is more lipophilic than sumatriptan.
Frovatriptan was also found to be a more potent contractile agent, compared to sumatriptan, on isolated basilar artery tissue.
Frovatriptan has a lower headache recurrence rate, compared to other agents in the triptan class, which may be explained by the long (26 hour) half-life, as well as the increased lipophilicity and potent contractile effects of this drug. Frovatriptan was approved by the FDA in November 2001.
