What is Dyphylline
Dyphylline (also known as dihydroxypropyltheophylline) is a xanthine bronchodilator that is used orally and intramuscularly for the treatment of asthma and bronchospasm.
Dyphylline is a derivative of theophylline, although it is not a theophylline salt and is not metabolized to theophylline in vivo. As a xanthine derivative, dyphylline exhibits similar characteristics to theophylline.
The potency of dyphylline is approximately 1/10th that of theophylline and blood concentrations and activity tend to be lower than theophylline.
According to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines for COPD, xanthines, such as dyphylline, are not recommended for the treatment of COPD and should not be used in acute COPD exacerbations due to the low efficacy at recommended doses and the potential for adverse reactions and toxicity.
Dyphylline was approved by the FDA in 1951 and remains available on the U.S. market in oral dosage forms.
