What is Beclomethasone

Beclomethasone is a synthetic halogenated inhaled glucocorticoid. It is used for treating steroid-dependent asthma, for relieving symptoms associated with allergic or nonallergic (vasomotor) rhinitis, for preventing recurrent nasal polyps following surgical removal, and for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The antiinflammatory and vasoconstrictive effects of intranasal beclomethasone are 5,000 times greater than those produced by hydrocortisone.

Asthma guidelines consider orally inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) to be the preferred pharmacologic treatment in the long-term management of persistent asthma.

The Expert Panel of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program concluded that ICSs are the most potent and consistently effective class of medications for the long-term control of asthma in both adult and pediatric patients.

Superior efficacy of ICSs has been demonstrated over other long-term control medications including leukotriene receptor antagonists, cromolyn, and theophylline.
