What is the significance of bowel sounds?  Bowel sounds are notoriously inaccurate in the surgical evaluation of the abdomen. Their absence may be indicative of ileus or peritonitis, whereas loud borborygmi, tinkling, or rushes may be suggestive of an obstructive process.
