New diagnostic criteria for schizoaffective disorder
The diagnostic criteria for schizoaffective disorder in DSM-5 include an uninterrupted period during which there is a major mood episode (depressive or manic) concurrent to meeting the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia.
Additionally, delusions and hallucinations should be present in the absence of a mood episode for ≥2 weeks.
The symptoms of the major mood episode should be present for the majority of the duration of both active and residual illness.
Of note, the symptoms should not be due to substance use or another medical condition.
