Which sleep disorder associated with excessive daytime sleepiness and snoring?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome.
This condition affects 3% to 7% of the adult population and 1% to 4% of the pediatric population. Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by repetitive episodes of apneas and partial upper airway obstruction (hypopnea) occurring during sleep, resulting in intermittent oxygen desaturation or fragmented sleep.
Excessive daytime sleepiness is a common presenting symptom along with loud snoring. PSG may be helpful in diagnosing OSA as well as determining the severity of OSA.
