What urine studies can help in the evaluation of hypokalemia?
A spot urine potassium-to-creatinine ratio of more than 13 mEq/g of creatinine in the presence of hypokalemia suggests kidney potassium wasting. Similarly, a 24-hour urine potassium excretion of more than 25 to 30 mEq/day in the setting of hypokalemia may suggest kidney potassium wasting.
