What is cataplexy? 

Cataplexy is a condition characterized by sudden episodes of either muscular weakness or paralysis without loss of consciousness, precipitated by emotional changes such as laughter, excitement, or anger.

Episodes typically last from a few seconds to several minutes and sometimes are terminated by a direct transition into sleep.
