What is the treatment approach to IBS?
- The first avenue of treatment in all IBS patients is lifestyle modification, including moderate or vigorous exercise (if tolerated), a well-balanced diet, stress reduction, and plenty of sleep.
- If unsuccessful, pharmacologic treatments based on the predominant symptom and severity should be considered.
- In patients with severe symptoms or psychological comorbidities (e.g., anxiety, depression), a multidisciplinary approach should be considered as many of these patients may also benefit from the addition of psychological intervention.
