S adenosylmethionine (SAM e)

SAM e: this is already formed in the body from methionine and ATP. SAM-e is a methyl-accepting intermediate in homocysteine formation, which with the help of vitamin B-12 will relinquish a methyl group to surrounding tissues

SAM-e is then broken down to sulfate groups, which may help cartilage formation. SAM-e is equivalent to NSAIDs in therapy of OA in controlled trials. Dose is 400 mg thrice a day and costs $40/month. It is also used to treat depression.
