What are the primary neurologic manifestations of hyperviscosity states? 

Hyperviscosity states are conditions in which red blood cells, white blood cells, or serum proteins are increased to a sufficient degree that impedance of blood flow and/or oxygen delivery results.

Neurologic manifestations include symptoms of either

  • chronic or acute vertebrobasilar insufficiency (tinnitus, lightheadedness, and headache);
  • paresthesias;
  • problems with mentation,
  • visual/auditory disturbances,
  • seizures,
  • stroke,
  • stupor,
  • coma
