Nucleus Ambiguus

What is the nucleus ambiguus?

Nucleus ambiguus is a cigar-shaped nucleus that lies in the depths of the medulla.

It innervates the volitional muscles of the pharynx by way of both cranial nerves IX and X and the larynx (for phonation) via cranial nerve X.

The larynx and pharynx have bilateral cortical input.
