What neuromuscular conditions are associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection? 

A large percentage of patients with HIV report myalgias and fatigue. However, one must also evaluate for other myopathic pathologies:

• HIV-associated polymyositis

• IBM

• Nemaline myopathy

• Mitochondrial myopathy due to antiretroviral drugs

• Diffuse infiltrative lymphocytosis syndrome

• HIV-wasting syndrome

• Vasculitic processes

• Lactic acidosis, hepatic steatosis, and myopathy
