Jugular foramen syndrome

What is jugular foramen syndrome?

Because cranial nerves IX, X, and XI exit the cranial vault through the jugular foramen, jugular foramen syndrome is a constellation of symptoms arising from a lesion (typically a tumor) at the level of the jugular foramen that compromises the function of these cranial nerves.

Symptoms include loss of taste to the posterior one-third of the tongue; paralysis of the vocal cords, palate, and pharynx; and paralysis of the trapezius and SCM muscles.
