Is gout seen frequently in Sickle Cell Disease?
In children with SCD, hyperuricosuria without hyperuricemia occurs, probably as a result of increased red cell turnover associated with crises. Up to 40% of adult patients with SCD will have hyperuricemia caused by renal tubular damage with decreased uric acid excretion. However, gout is surprisingly uncommon. Occasionally gout may be seen; therefore, crystals should be looked for in joint effusions seen during SCD crisis.
