Hemoptysis

What is Hemoptysis

Hemoptysis is when you cough up blood. It can be mild or serious. If it is mild, you may cough up bloody spit and mucus (sputum). If you cough up 1–2 cups (240–480 mL) of blood within 24 hours (massive hemoptysis), it is an emergency.

If you cough up blood, it is important to go and see your doctor.

Follow these instructions at home:

  • Watch your condition for any changes.
  • Take over-the-counter and prescription medicines only as told by your doctor.
  • If you were prescribed an antibiotic medicine, take it as told by your doctor. Do not stop taking the antibiotic even if you start to feel better.
  • Go back to your normal activities as told by your doctor. Ask your doctor what activities are safe for you to do.
  • Do not use any products that contain nicotine or tobacco. These include cigarettes and e-cigarettes. If you need help quitting, ask your doctor.
  • Keep all follow-up visits as told by your doctor. This is important.

Contact a doctor if:

  • You have a fever.
  • You cough up bloody spit and mucus.

Get help right away if:

  • You cough up fresh blood or blood clots.
  • You have trouble breathing.
  • You have chest pain.
