What are the indications for EUS guided celiac plexus block (CPB) and CPN? What is the difference? Why do they work?
- The celiac plexus transmits pain sensations from the pancreas and most of the abdominal organs.
- As a result, blockage of this transmission has been found to be effective in the therapy of pain.
- CPB refers to the use of steroid or local anesthetics to temporarily inhibit celiac plexus function in patients with uncontrolled pain secondary to chronic pancreatitis.
- CPN refers to the use of alcohol or phenol to produce neurolysis in patients with uncontrolled pain secondary to pancreatic cancer.
