Differences between the effects of estrogen and progesterone on seizures
In adults, estrogen is neuroexcitable, while progesterone (specifically one of its metabolites called allopregnanolone ) is neuroinhibitory.
As such, estrogen can increase the occurrence of seizures, while progesterone may tend to reduce seizures.
The balance between these hormones has corresponding effects on seizures throughout the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and other hormonal changes.
