At what level of kidney dysfunction is it appropriate to refer a patient for kidney transplant evaluation?
If a medically acceptable living donor has been identified, elective kidney transplantation ideally is performed just before dialysis is required (“preemptive”). If a living donor is not available, patients can be evaluated for transplantation at any time, but cannot officially be listed for transplantation until their glomerular filtration rate falls below 20 mL/min.
