Ancillary studies to evaluate suspected Alzheimers Disease
Which ancillary studies (in addition to blood tests) are useful to evaluate patients with suspected AD?
A structural imaging study (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] or computed tomography [CT] with contrast) and neuropsychological testing to confirm dementia are necessary.
Electroencephalography (EEG), single-photon emission CT (SPECT), or positron emission tomography (FDG-PET and/or amyloid imaging PET) studies and lumbar puncture (LP) may be useful or even necessary.
Also consider an electrocardiogram (to look for evidence of cardiovascular disease) and chest radiograph.
