Acute kidney injury (AKI)

What is acute kidney injury (AKI)?

Acute kidney injury is a sudden decrease in kidney function occurring over a period of hours to days.

The acute decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is usually manifested by the accumulation of waste products including, but not limited to, urea and creatinine in the blood (azotemia), and is sometimes accompanied by oliguria.
