Diet for Hyperemesis Gravidarum

What is the Diet for Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Hyperemesis gravidarum is a severe form of morning sickness. Because this condition causes severe nausea and vomiting, it can lead to dehydration, malnutrition, and weight loss.

One way to lessen the symptoms of nausea and vomiting is to follow the eating plan for hyperemesis gravidarum. It is often used along with prescribed medicines to control your symptoms.

What can I do to relieve my symptoms?

Listen to your body. Everyone is different and has different preferences. Find what works best for you. Take any of the following actions that are helpful to you:

  • Eat and drink slowly.
  • Eat 5–6 small meals daily instead of 3 large meals.
  • Eat crackers before you get out of bed in the morning.
  • Try having a snack in the middle of the night.
  • Starchy foods are usually tolerated well. Examples include cereal, toast, bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, and pretzels.
  • Ginger may help with nausea. Add ¼ tsp ground ginger to hot tea or choose ginger tea.
  • Try drinking 100% fruit juice or an electrolyte drink. An electrolyte drink contains sodium, potassium, and chloride.
  • Continue to take your prenatal vitamins as told by your health care provider. If you are having trouble taking your prenatal vitamins, talk with your health care provider about different options.
  • Include at least 1 serving of protein with your meals and snacks. Protein options include meats or poultry, beans, nuts, eggs, and yogurt. Try eating a protein-rich snack before bed. Examples of these snacks include cheese and crackers or half of a peanut butter or turkey sandwich.
  • Consider eliminating foods that trigger your symptoms. These may include spicy foods, coffee, high-fat foods, very sweet foods, and acidic foods.
  • Try meals that have more protein combined with bland, salty, lower-fat, and dry foods, such as nuts, seeds, pretzels, crackers, and cereal.
  • Talk with your healthcare provider about starting a supplement of vitamin B6.
  • Have fluids that are cold, clear, and carbonated or sour. Examples include lemonade, ginger ale, lemon-lime soda, ice water, and sparkling water.
  • Try lemon or mint tea.
  • Try brushing your teeth or using a mouth rinse after meals.

What should I avoid to reduce my symptoms?

Avoiding some of the following things may help reduce your symptoms.

  • Foods with strong smells. Try eating meals in well-ventilated areas that are free of odors.
  • Drinking water or other beverages with meals. Try not to drink anything during the 30 minutes before and after your meals.
  • Drinking more than 1 cup of fluid at a time. Sometimes using a straw helps.
  • Fried or high-fat foods, such as butter and cream sauces.
  • Spicy foods.
  • Skipping meals as best as you can. Nausea can be more intense on an empty stomach. If you cannot tolerate food at that time, do not force it. Try sucking on ice chips or other frozen items, and make up for missed calories later.
  • Lying down within 2 hours after eating.
  • Environmental triggers. These may include smoky rooms, closed spaces, rooms with strong smells, warm or humid places, overly loud and noisy rooms, and rooms with motion or flickering lights.
  • Quick and sudden changes in your movement.
