What is Isosorbide Dinitrate ISDN

Isosorbide dinitrate is a moderate- to long-acting oral organic nitrate used for the relief and prophylactic management of angina pectoris.

Isosorbide dinitrate also has been used as adjunct therapy to treat congestive heart failure, although this indication is not approved by the manufacturer.

The addition of hydralazine, an arterial vasodilator, to isosorbide was the first drug combination demonstrated to improve mortality in patients with CHF, albeit to a lesser degree than observed with ACE inhibition.

Because of this, isosorbide dinitrate plus hydralazine is considered an alternative therapy in the treatment of heart failure in patients who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors. Isosorbide is somewhat effective in treating diffuse esophageal spasm†.

Isosorbide dinitrate was first approved by the FDA in 1961.

In June 2005, a fixed-dose combination therapy of isosorbide dinitrate and hydralazine (BiDil®) was approved by the FDA for the treatment of heart failure in black patients.

When used in conjunction with standard therapy in black patients, this drug combination reduces mortality, reduces the rate of first hospitalizations, and improves quality of life
