What is Ioxilan
Ioxilan is an iodinated, nonionic radiographic contrast agent indicated for cerebral arteriography; coronary arteriography and left ventriculography; visceral angiography; aortography; peripheral arteriography; excretory urography; and contrast computed tomography (CT) of the head and body.
Ioxilan is only approved for intravascular administration; avoid inadvertent intrathecal administration as this can result in serious adverse events, including death. Serious and potentially fatal adverse events (i.e., cardiovascular toxicities, hypersensitivity reactions, severe cutaneous adverse reactions, acute renal failure) may also occur during intravascular use. T
o minimize the toxicity risk, ensure the patients are adequately hydrated and use the smallest necessary volume and concentration of ioxilan.
Indications
- angiography
- computed tomography (CT) imaging
- urography
Side Effects
Iodinated contrast agents have been associated with severe cutaneous adverse reactions, including Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS).
The reaction onset ranges from 1 hour to several weeks after intravascular drug administration; however, repeat drug exposure may shorten the time to onset and increase the reaction severity. Prophylactic medications may not prevent or mitigate these reactions.
