What is Enteral Lipid Nutritional Fortifiers
Lipid nutritional fortifiers are fat-based fortifiers that are used for nutritional support for conditions such as fluid or volume restriction, chylothorax, impaired fat absorption (e.g., cystic fibrosis and chronic liver disease), decreased carbohydrate tolerance, and other conditions requiring increased caloric requirements.
Lipid fortifiers are also used as a component in ketogenic diets in patients with intractable epilepsy.
They do not contain added protein or carbohydrates. Most products have no electrolytes or minerals; however, some contain negligible amounts.
Most products contain medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) from modified coconut and/or palm kernel oil as the fat source; however, products made from safflower oil are also available.
In the MCT products, the amount of MCT varies from 50% (with approximately 50% water) to 100%.
Lipid nutritional fortifiers are not intended as the sole source of nutrition; additional nutrients must be provided in the diet.
Lipid nutritional fortifiers are lactose-free and gluten-free.
