Diltiazem Enalapril

What is Diltiazem Enalapril

NOTE: This drug is discontinued in the US.

Enalapril, an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, and diltiazem, a calcium-channel blocker may be prescribed together in an oral combination as a second-line treatment for hypertension.

The drugs have complimentary mechanisms of action which decrease peripheral resistance and lower blood pressure.

Each extended-release Teczem® tablet consists of a diltiazem core within a semipermeable membrane. The core is coated with enalapril, which is released immediately after tablet ingestion.

When the coating dissolves and water permeates the core membrane, diltiazem is dissolved and released.

Teczem® is a once daily dosage form for patients who fail on single-drug therapy with either enalapril or diltiazem, and require addition of another antihypertensive agent. The combination product produces significantly greater blood pressure reductions than either agent used alone.

Teczem® was approved in October 1996.

This drug was withdrawn from the market in 1999.
