What is dementia with Lewy bodies?
A spectrum of disorders probably makes up Lewy body disease, ranging from Parkinson’s disease (with Lewy bodies primarily in the subcortical and brain stem regions) to diffuse Lewy body disease, in which Lewy bodies are present throughout the cortex, subcortex, and brain stem.
Some authorities describe an intermediate form of Lewy body dementia (senile dementia of the Lewy body type), which is associated with many Lewy bodies in the brain stem and subcortical regions, fewer in the hippocampus, and fewer still in the neocortical region.
When Lewy bodies occur in AD brains, the condition may be called Lewy body variant of AD .
