What is segmentation?
Segmentation is a preprocessing technique used to recognize and delineate objects in an image dataset. Recognition is the determination of an object’s approximate whereabouts in an image, which is a high-level task in which humans typically outperform computers. Delineation is the determination of an object’s precise spatial extent and composition in an image, which is a low-level task in which computers typically outperform humans. For example, one may segment the lungs from the thorax on a chest CT study and then segment areas of lung emphysema
