Role of interferons in Multiple Sclerosis
Is there a role of interferons for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis?
These medications are given by self-injection.
Some patients do not tolerate interferons because of their flu-like side effects.
From 2% to 20% of patients produce neutralizing antibodies against these drugs as well.
Interferons may work by altering T cells so they are less active in the inflammatory process.
The approved preparations are:
- Beta-interferon-1b (Betaseron—subcutaneous QOD)
- Beta-interferon-1a (Avonex—intramuscular; once weekly)
- Beta-interferon-1a (Rebif—subcutaneous; 3 times per week)
- Beta-interferon-1a glycosylated (Plegridy—subcutaneous every 14 days)
