What is responsive neurostimulation (RNS)?
RNS is a closed loop system where intracranially implanted electrodes (one to two depth or strip electrodes with a maximum of eight active contacts) are placed at the location of the presumed seizure onset.
These electrodes continuously record cortical EEG and check for electrographic seizure activity using automated algorithms. When this activity is recognized, the system delivers current to decrease seizure frequency at preset thresholds (hence, it is called responsive neurostimulation ).
How effective is it in reducing seizures?
A seizure frequency reduction of >50% has been reported at 2 years with RNS use. In addition, improvement in the quality of life has also been reported with the use of RNS.
