Phimosis

Phimosis

Phimosis is a tightening of the fold of skin that stretches over the tip of the penis (foreskin). The foreskin may be so tight that it cannot be easily pulled back over the head of the penis.

What are the causes?

This condition may be caused by:

  • Normal body functioning.
  • Infection.
  • An injury to the penis.
  • Inflammation that results from poor cleaning of the foreskin.

What increases the risk?

This condition is more likely to develop in uncircumcised boys who are younger than 4 years of age.

How is this diagnosed?

This condition is diagnosed with a physical exam.

How is this treated?

Usually, no treatment is needed for this condition. Without treatment, this condition usually improves with time. If treatment is needed, it may involve:

  • Applying creams and ointments.
  • A procedure to remove part of the foreskin (circumcision). This may be done in severe cases in which very little blood reaches the tip of the penis.

Follow these instructions at home:

  • Do not try to force back the foreskin. This may cause scarring and make the condition worse.
  • Clean under the foreskin regularly.
  • Apply creams or ointments as told by your child’s health care provider.
  • Keep all follow-up visits as told by your child’s health care provider. This is important.

Contact a health care provider if:

  • There are signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or drainage from the foreskin.
  • Your child feels pain when he urinates.

Get help right away if:

  • Your child has not passed urine in 24 hours.
  • Your child has a fever.
