What is the normal size of the ovaries in premenopausal versus postmenopausal women?
The ovaries in premenopausal women on average measure approximately 5 mL in volume, and multiple small <1 cm follicles are typically seen. Each month a dominant follicle develops and extrudes an egg during ovulation. In postmenopausal women, the ovaries on average measure approximately 2 mL in volume, are more homogenous and more frequently without the presence of follicles, and may be difficult to visualize on imaging. Ovarian volume is inversely proportional to patient age.
