What is Mittelschmerz

Mittelschmerz is pain in the belly (abdomen). The pain happens between periods. It can happen with a feeling of being sick to your stomach (nausea). It can also happen with a small amount of bleeding from your vagina.

Mittelschmerz is lower abdominal pain that occurs during the middle of the menstrual cycle secondary to ovulation, often perceived in the lower midline.

Follow these instructions at home:

Pay attention to any changes in your condition. Take these actions to help with your pain:

  • Try soaking in a hot bath.
  • Take over-the-counter and prescription medicines only as told by your doctor.
  • Keep all follow-up visits as told by your doctor. This is important.

Contact a doctor if:

  • The pain is very bad most months.
  • The pain lasts longer than 24 hours.
  • Your pain medicine is not helping.
  • You have a fever.
  • You feel sick to your stomach, and the feeling does not go away.
  • You keep throwing up (vomiting).
  • You miss your period.
  • You have more than a small amount of blood coming from your vagina between periods.
