What are known triggers and associations of aHUS?
Patients with aHUS have a genetic defect that renders them susceptible to end-organ damage. Hence several triggers and associations have been identified. Infections with human immunodeficiency virus, as well as bacterial infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae , are known triggers of aHUS. Pregnancy and malignancy are also known triggers. Medications such as calcineurin inhibitors (tacrolimus and cyclosporine), chemotherapeutic agents (i.e., mitomycin C, cisplatin, and gemcitabine), and antiplatelet agents (clopidogrel, ticlodipine) have all been associated with atypical HUS.
