Jaw Dislocation

What is Jaw Dislocation

Jaw dislocation is when the joint that connects the jaw bones (temporomandibular joint) moves out of place. This can be very painful. Your jaw must be moved back into place by your doctor (manual reduction).

Follow these instructions at home:

Injury care

  • If you have a jaw bandage (Barton bandage) or a neck brace, wear it as told by your doctor.
  • If directed, put ice on the injured area:
    • Put ice in a plastic bag.
    • Place a towel between your skin and the bag.
    • Leave the ice on for 20 minutes, 2–3 times per day.
  • Take over-the-counter and prescription medicines only as told by your doctor.
  • Rest your jaw as told by your doctor.
  • Avoid activities that are like the one that caused your injury.
  • Do not open your mouth wide until you doctor says that you can.
  • When you sneeze or yawn, put a hand under your jaw. This will keep your mouth from opening too wide.
  • Follow instructions from your doctor about what you can eat and drink while your jaw is healing. Instructions may include:
    • Eating soft foods.
    • Eating liquid food.
    • Eating food that has been cut into small pieces.
  • Keep all follow-up visits as told by your doctor. This is important.

Contact a doctor if:

  • You have pain that gets worse, and medicines do not help your pain.

Get help right away if:

  • Your jaw becomes dislocated again.
  • You have trouble breathing.
