What is meant by “incident pain?”

Incident pain is the term used to describe pain precipitated by movement such as repositioning, deep respiration, or ambulation. It may also be caused by procedures such as venipuncture, cannula insertion, or physical therapy. Pretreatment with appropriate pain medications or adjuvants prior to procedures, dressing changes, personal care, toileting, or ambulating are useful for mitigating incident pain.
