What are the imaging characteristics of a pulmonary AVM on X ray CT and MRI?
On a chest radiograph, pulmonary AVMs appear as serpentine or nodular densities in the lungs that may appear to connect to the hilum. On CT and MRI, they appear as serpentine, tubular, or nodular foci in the lungs that have vascular connections with a feeding pulmonary artery and a draining pulmonary vein, and which enhance to a degree similar to that of other pulmonary arteries. On dynamic contrast-enhanced images, one may see enhancement in a sequential manner from the feeding pulmonary artery, to the AVM, to the draining pulmonary vein
