How to Use a Clavicle Strap

How to Use a Clavicle Strap

A clavicle strap is a bandage that wraps around the shoulders and upper back to prevent an injured collarbone (clavicle) from moving while it heals. You may need to use a clavicle strap if you have a broken (fractured) collarbone.

A clavicle strap is typically made from a wide, elastic bandage. It holds your collarbone still (immobile) by pulling your shoulders back. The strap is fastened tightly on your upper back.

What are the risks?

A clavicle strap can sometimes result in chafing and skin irritation under the strap. To help prevent this, put baby powder or cornstarch on your skin as told by your health care provider.

How to use a clavicle strap

  • Wear the strap as told by your health care provider. You may need to wear it most of the time for 4–8 weeks.
  • Put on and take off the strap as told by your health care provider.
    • Make sure the tension of the strap is not so tight that it causes pain.
    • Adjust the tension of the strap to provide proper support to the shoulders as swelling goes down.
  • Limit arm and shoulder movements while wearing the strap as told by your health care provider.
  • Remove the strap for bathing.
  • Clean and powder your skin often to prevent chafing and skin irritation.
  • Remove and clean the strap periodically.

Contact a health care provider if:

  • You have any areas of broken skin from the clavicle strap.
  • You have pain when moving or using the clavicle strap.
  • Your pain is getting worse or is not improving over time.

Get help right away if:

  • You have numbness, coolness, or discoloration of your hands or arms.
