How is Multiple Sclerosis accurately diagnosed
Given the great variability in the signs, symptoms, and clinical course of MS, how can it be accurately diagnosed?
The diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis can be one of the most difficult in neurology. Nevertheless, certain clinical criteria usually identify Multiple Sclerosis
Clinical Criteria for Definite Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Two separate central nervous system symptoms—lesions disseminated in space
- Two separate attacks at least 1 month apart—lesions disseminated in time
- Symptoms must involve the white matter
- Age 10-50 years (although usually 20-40 years)
- Objective deficits are present on the neurologic examination
- No other medical problem can be found to explain the patient’s condition
