How does parvo B19 virus cause arthritis?
It is believed that during viremia, the deposition of immune complexes comprised of the virus and anti-parvovirus IgM antibodies leads to a nonspecific inflammatory response. This includes the recruitment of immune cells and the production of several proinflammatory cytokines. In acute arthritis, viral DNA has been documented in the synovial fluid. Patients with chronic joint symptoms may have parvo B19 DNA in their synovium and bone marrow.
