How can systemic complications of stroke be prevented?
In all cases of stroke, ensure adequate deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis to prevent pulmonary emboli.
Keep patients nil per os (NPO) until safe swallowing can be confirmed to prevent aspiration and subsequent pneumonia.
Frequent turning prevents skin breakdown. Catheters should be removed as soon as possible.
Patients should be mobilized as soon as safely possible, although many are at high risk of falls and may need constant supervision—those with neglect in particular as they are unaware of their deficits.
