Genetic component of Alzheimers Disease
Is there a genetic component to all cases of Alzheimers Disease?
The answer is not clear. Patients with a family history of Alzheimers Disease in even one primary relative appear to be at increased risk, and the risk is higher (up to 10-fold higher) if both parents have Alzheimers Disease.
Cases that seem to be sporadic are common, although the ApoE genotype is a clear risk factor for both sporadic and late-onset familial cases.
Multiple genetic factors probably account for a predisposition for Alzheimers Disease.
