Does treatment of dyslipidemia prevent the progression of kidney disease

Does treatment of dyslipidemia prevent the progression of kidney disease?

The best trial evidence for this comes from a secondary analysis of the SHARP study, which randomized 6245 individuals with non-dialysis-requiring CKD, to either simvastatin/ezetimibe or placebo.

There was no difference in the risk of ESKD, or the composite outcome of ESRD, or the doubling of serum creatinine between the two groups.

A meta-analysis of 57 studies including 143,888 participants demonstrated that while therapy with statins did not decrease the risk of kidney failure events, the rate of decline in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the change in proteinuria or albuminuria were lower for those receiving statin therapy.

Therefore while dyslipidemia is a risk factor for progressive kidney disease, it remains unclear if treating dyslipidemia results in better kidney outcomes.
