Do sleep needs in children differ from those in adults?

Sleep needs in children differ from those in adults.

During the newborn period, the amount of sleep newborns require is about 16 to 18 hours over a 24-hour period.

By 6 months of age, sleep duration decreases to about 14 hours.

Sleep during the day then begins to consolidate into one to two naps by 1 year of age. Most children stop taking naps by age 4 or 5 years in preparation for a full day of school.

By childhood, sleep requirements gradually decrease to 10 to 11 hours. This decreases to 8 to 9 hours during adolescence into adulthood.
