Can IV calcium be given if the phosphorus is high?
While the calcium phosphorus product does not represent the relationship of intravascular calcification, adding calcium to a patient with hyperphosphatemia does induce ectopic calcification. That being said, the risks of acute hypocalcemia including arrhythmia, laryngospasm, and hemodynamic compromise outweigh the long-term risks of vascular calcification. So calcium can be given for symptomatic hypocalcemia even in the presence of hyperphosphatemia.
