Are antibiotics effective in shiga toxin infection
Should patients with shiga toxin infection be treated with antibiotics?
No. This has remained a controversial subject for many years. A recent meta-analysis revealed that the use of antibiotics in Shiga toxin infections was not associated with increased risk of developing HUS.
When the authors excluded papers that were at a high risk of bias and did not have an acceptable definition of HUS, there was a significant association between antibiotic use for Shiga toxin infections and the development of HUS.
