What is Phosphorated Carbohydrate Solution

Phosphorated carbohydrate solution is an over-the-counter oral solution containing a mixture of dextrose (glucose), levulose (fructose) and phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid is added to adjust the pH of the commercial product to between 1.5—1.6.

Phosphorated carbohydrate solution is used for the relief of stomach upset associated with intestinal flu, stomach flu, or food or drink indiscretions. Phosphorated carbohydrate solution has been used in an attempt to alleviate nausea (‘morning sickness’) associated with pregnancy.

However, while historically recommended by practitioners for this purpose, the use of phosphorated carbohydrate solution is not mentioned as a treatment strategy in current guidelines for treating nausea/vomiting of pregnancy.

Phosphorated carbohydrates is a FDA Category III non-prescription (OTC) ingredient; there is insufficient evidence to establish or refute effectiveness as an antiemetic.

Side Effects

There are no documented serious adverse reactions from the use of phosphorated carbohydrate solution. Large doses of fructose may cause abdominal pain or diarrhea.
